Another problem I have with social networking…
So, I like to remember peoples birthdays. Not as trivia, but for many friends I only call them once a year and I feel that my rememberance of thier special day would be appreciated. Of course, I don’t memorize them all, I do have calendars. But, now with the social networking sites (most of which I don’t even subscribe to) everyone gets a reminder that your birthday is coming up soon, or is today. So, I feel that cheapens the birthday wishes and discounts any assumption of memory. Now, I find that I don’t even want to call you for your birthday because the assumption would be that I didn’t remember but that “facebook told me” and I don’t even have a facebook account! Of course I realize that I am placing value on the call vs. the conversation and that the conversation should be the real value - but lets face it - how enjoyable is conversation with me. Also, I am aware of what happens when you assume what someone else’s assumptions will beĀ - but hey, we have established that.
